The Westmoreland Glass Company was founded in 1889 when a group of investors purchased the Specialty Glass Company in East Liverpool, Ohio. Shortly after, the company relocated to Grapeville, Pennsylvania (just outside of Jeanette). The company was renamed Westmoreland Glass Company around 1924. Early products of the company included: bottles, jars, and glass candy containers.
Westmoreland is primarily known for producing an exceptional quality milk glass, however, the company also produced colored and carnival glass. Two colors produced by Westmoreland fall into the jadite family, these are mint green and green portieux (jade). The mint green color is slightly lighter than most other jadite, while the green portieux is a clambroth green color. Most of the glass produced by Westmoreland is hallmarked with either a W in a Keystone, a stacked W&G, or a circular Westmoreland. The company closed in 1984, and its molds were sold to many companies, including Fenton & Mosser.
