The Jeanette Glass Company

Jadite Junkies Glass Class

History: Jeanette was founded in 1888 as a bottle glass company in Jeanette, Pennsylvania.  The company did not start making household products until the early 1930’s.  Most of the glass produced by Jeanette is what we now call depression glass and carnival glass.  In 1932, the Jeanette Glass Company first produced jadite glass.  Jeanette was also the first company to refer to this color as “Jadite”.  Jeanette Glass Company purchased the McKee Glass Company in 1961, sadly Jeanette went out of business in 1983.

Identifying Jeanette: Most Jeanette Glass Company’s jadite isis unmarked, which means it is easy to reproduce.  While most of the glass is unmarked, the company did use a number of hallmarks  all feature the letter “J”.  This “J” can be found alone, in a square or triangle, or  in the bowl of a goblet.  The important thing to remember is that vintage Jeanette will glow under a black light, while reproduction glass made with Jeanette molds will not .

Light vs Dark: Jeanette produced jadite in two shades, a light jadite which is the most common and a dark jadite that is harder to find.  Both shades contain depleted uranium, which means that the glass will glow under a blacklight.
